Spanish Soccer Federation President Luis Rubiales Resigns Following Unwanted Kiss During World Cup Final

In an interview with Piers Morgan, Rubiales said he was stepping down from his job after being suspended by FIFA for the incident.

“Many people believe you should resign as president, what are you going to do?” Morgan asked Rubiales in the interview he shared on social media

Rubiales replied, “About my resignation, I’m going to do…I cannot continue my work.”

He continued, “I spoke with my daughters and they know it is not a question about me. They say I have to focus on my dignity and my life. In this situation now, this is the thing that I have to do.”

Rubiales kissed Hermoso on the lips following Spain’s Women’s World Cup triumph, a kiss that Hermoso did not consent to. FIFA suspended Rubiales while its disciplinary committee investigated his conduct and the president refused to resign.

The president of Spain’s women’s league, Beatriz Álvarez, told The Associated Press that she believed this was the end of Rubiales’ soccer career.

“Luis Rubiales is finished. He has dug his own grave with his acts and his words,” Álvarez said. “Whether it is because of the action of FIFA or the Spanish government, I am sure that Luis Rubiales won’t spend another minute as president of the Spanish federation.”
