Spike strip ends high speed chase in West Vancouver

Youth arrested after gun fired in North Battleford

A high speed police pursuit came to an end in West Vancouver, after a suspect in a stolen vehicle drove over a tire spike strip early Thursday morning.

Two people — a man and a woman — were arrested after the wild ride, according to Surrey RCMP Staff Sgt. Blair McColl.

The chase happened a little after 1 a.m. It began in Surrey at 152 Street and 102A Avenue, after a suspect allegedly rammed an RCMP cruiser, said McColl.

The grey Honda Civic was stolen in Coquitlam earlier in the night, and had not yet been reported missing by the owner, said McColl.

Several officers pursued the driver onto the Trans-Canada Highway and chased the vehicle about 45 km, all the way to Exit 4, near Horseshoe Bay.

Tire spike strip used

McColl said the driver stayed on the highway until the car's tires had been punctured by a spike strip.

"He'd already been spiked and there wasn't much left of his tires, so he got off the highway," said McColl, who added that at least two of the tires were shredded.

The chase came to an end on Westport Road, near the Trans-Canada Highway in West Vancouver.

McColl said the pursuit would have gone differently if the RCMP Air 1 helicopter had been in the air when it began, but the aircraft was in the middle of refueling at the time.
