Splash of colour spruces up LaSalle's Bell Canada utility boxes

The Town of LaSalle has partnered with Bell Canada in a community project designed to brighten neighbourhoods, while building strong relationships with artists from around the region.

Eight artists will paint murals onto Bell Canada utility boxes, which are traditionally painted brown.

David Creed is painting the box on Divine Street, located between Superior Street and Bouffard Road. Creed is using spray paint to create a mural of The Tea Party.

"I wanted to glorify the arts of the area, being music," said Creed as he stood shaking a spray can. "Arts culture is one of the biggest things that is missing in our whole county and it is becoming more and more apparent that we need it."

He already has residents stopping and enjoying the work, which he hopes encourages more people to appreciate the art culture in the area.

"This type of project needs to be supported by our community continuously … Art changes things and it makes things important and grows a culture in the area, which is necessary," he said.

Creed wants to contact members of The Tea Party to have them sign their names.

The murals, which are funded by the Town of LaSalle, will cost a little more than $9,500. The artists are paid $500 each. The paint has been supplied by Merlo Paint and Wallpaper on Walker Road.

Since 2009, 193 murals have been painted on Bell Canada utility boxes in 24 communities in southern Ontario, Toronto and Quebec. The Town of Essex is another municipality in the area that has joined the program.
