Sportfest coming to Corner Brook, only stop in Atlantic Canada

For the first time, a trade show promoting sports to young people will take place on Newfoundland's west coast.

Sport Newfoundland and Labrador will take 2015 Sportfest to Corner Brook for two days in June.

The show, which has been held in St. John's for the past five years, highlights sports, all under one roof.

But this is not the only first.

The Canadian Olympic Committee will hold Olympic Day, an event that gives the general public a chance to try a sport with a Canadian Olympic athlete.

Olympian fencer Julie Mahoney, who was part of Thursday's launch event, is excited about coming to the island.

She said Corner Brook is, in fact, the only stop in Atlantic Canada.

"We've had Olympic Day in Richmond to begin with, and this year we are expanding Olympic Day," Mahoney said.

"We had Ottawa and we are adding Montreal and Corner Brook to this exciting movement. I think this is really positive, we are expanding it and we are so happy to be in Newfoundland this year — so yeah, it's unique."

Mahoney said she hopes the event will open up different sports, like fencing, to people who wouldn't see it otherwise.

Sportfest takes place on June 19 and 20.
