St. Albert students launch weather balloon into the sky
Students from Sir George Simpson Junior High launched a balloon into the heavens Saturday morning, all in the name of science.
The St. Albert Balloon Launch Experiment (SABLE) is a non-profit, education based science club at Sir George Simpson that has been launching weather balloons into the stratosphere since 2004. Students will record and study data, photos and video taken from high altitudes.
This year marks the eighth SABLE mission.
Club members, parents and staff were on hand to watch the launch.
Eric Brink, a student, said this is an exciting way to learn about math and science.
“We learned a lot about the latitude we need, the way we can calculate weight and how fast it will go up and just the science behind stuff like this,” he said. “It’s pretty cool.”
The project involves various areas of study, including physics, meteorology and geography.
Ground crews will track and follow the balloon before eventually recovering the payload. The balloons can reach altitudes of 110,000-feet.
