The Columbia Fire Department responded to a fatal fire in unincorporated St. Clair County Saturday.

A 78-year-old St. Clair County man died when the railroad caboose he was living in caught fire Saturday.

The victim, Robert Euge, was identified by St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. Euge was pronounced dead at the scene in the 1200 block of Mule Road at 1:25 p.m., Dye said.

The St. Clair County Sheriff’s department responded to the scene at 12:24 p.m. after receiving a call reporting the fire, said Lt. James Hendricks. Deputies encountered heavy fire and smoke when they arrived, he said.

Family members were on the scene when deputies arrived. Euge was found inside the red and black train caboose by members of the Columbia Fire Department, Hendricks said. The caboose was destroyed.

The address is in unincorporated St. Clair County, but it has a Columbia mailing address.
