St. Croix home destroyed in Saturday fire

A St. Croix, N.S. home that was more than 100 years old was destroyed in a Saturday fire.

Fire officials say the homeowner noticed a chimney fire and then left the 2.5-storey wood-frame residence and called for help.

"It was fully involved upon our arrival," said Andy McDade, the fire chief of the Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department.

A heavy snowfall complicated the efforts to fight the fire.

"We had a little lull in the water there while waiting for tankers to arrive," said McDade.

He says the fire department received the call about the fire at 3:20 p.m. and spent six hours at the scene .

McDade says the fact the home was insulated with sawdust and newspaper helped the fire spread more rapidly.

"It was a very fast, free-burning fire," he said.

There weren't any injuries.
