St. Lawrence sewage petition with 90,000 signatures to be presented to Denis Coderre

Montreal sewage dump starts tonight at midnight

The man who started a petition against Montreal's plans to dump untreated wastewater into the St. Lawrence River is taking his message directly to Mayor Denis Coderre.

More than 90,000 people have signed Xavier Nonnenmacher's petition, "The St. Lawrence is not a garbage," in just under two weeks.

Nonnenmacher plans to head to a Ville-Marie borough council meeting this evening to present the petition to Coderre, who is also the borough mayor.

The city is planning to temporarily divert a week's worth of sewage — about eight billion litres — into the river beginning Oct. 18.

Concerned citizens, civil engineers, environmental scientists and biologists, the provincial government, Environment Canada and U.S. politicians have all voiced their concerns over the sewage dump.
