Junior wide receiver Tommy Hutsler of St. Pius X High School in Kansas City is a three-sport athlete — playing basketball in the winter and baseball in the spring.

St. Pius X football head coach Anthony Simone said both sports have contributed to Hutsler’s success on the football field.

His performance against Savannah High School on Oct. 20 earned him the honor of being named the KC Star’s high school football Player of the Week.

“Tommy learned how to grind and overcome last basketball season,” Simone said. “The team had a rough start, but they stayed focused and grinded to the Elite Eight. I also believe tracking the ball in center field has contributed to improving his ball skills on the football field.”

Hutsler caught the ball six times for 179 receiving yards and two touchdowns in St. Pius X’s 34-13 win over Savannah High School on Oct. 20.

Every week, The Star reaches out to high school football coaches in the Kansas City area for their Player of the Week nominations. The nominations are collected for a weekly poll, which is open from Wednesday to midnight Thursday. This week’s poll saw 85 votes.

Hutsler finished the regular season with 37 catches, 780 yards and 12 receiving touchdowns.

Simone said that Hutsler and the rest of the St. Pius X football team are excited to have the opportunity to fight together for another week.

St. Pius X is heading into the Class 3, District 8 playoffs with an 8-2 record. With a win against Northeast High School (1-7) at 7 p.m. Friday, they will fight together for at least one more week.
