Apartments temporarily evacuated after stabbing, standoff in St. John's

A man is facing charges after an apparent stabbing followed by a short standoff at an apartment building in the west end of St. John's early Thursday.

Patrol officers, forensic investigators and a K9 unit were called to a house on Empire Avenue around 12:30 a.m.

A man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries before police arrived.

Officers located the suspect a short time later, at an apartment building on nearby Anspach Street.

The man, 24, barricaded himself inside, telling police he was armed. Police negotiators were called in.

Some residents in the building were told to leave temporarily for their safety, while negotiators talked to the suspect.

The man eventually turned himself in without incident around 3 a.m.

He was held in custody to appear in provincial court in St. John's Thursday on charges of assault with a weapon, mischief, uttering threats and breach conditions of a probation order.

The two men know each other.
