Jonas Budd, Saskatchewan Amber Alert suspect, charged with murder, kidnapping

A 12-hour standoff in a Saskatchewan village is over, and a man in custody faces numerous charges following the shooting death of a teenage boy and alleged abduction of a 17-year-old girl in an Amber Alert.

Jonas Budd, who was arrested in Sturgeon Landing without incident around 10:30 p.m. CST Thursday, has been charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping and a number of weapons offences, the RCMP said.

The standoff began when police surrounded a house in the village next to the Manitoba border.

When it was over, more than 12 hours later, Budd's sister, Joyce Budd, expressed relief on her Facebook page.

"End of it. My brother is in custody. Thank you for the support to many family and friends, and friends of Jonas's and new friends made through this difficult time," she said.

Police said Budd will make his first appearance in La Ronge provincial court on Monday.

He's charged with:

- First-degree murder.

- Kidnapping with a weapon.

- Uttering threats.

- Pointing a weapon.

- Possessing a dangerous weapon.

- Possessing a firearm while prohibited.

- Breaking and entering.

The search for Budd started Wednesday morning when someone fatally shot 17-year-old Dustin Bird at a home on the Lac La Ronge Indian Band in northern Saskatchewan. Police said Budd was a suspect and was also responsible for the abduction of the 17-year-old girl, who is the daughter of his ex-partner.

Sturgeon Landing is close to the Manitoba border, about 120 kilometres south of Flin Flon.
