Downey High distance runner Zoe Leach saved her best high school race for the season’s most important day.
The junior was outstanding at the Central California Athletic League cross country championships on Oct. 25, finishing first in the girls 5,000 meters and setting a new personal best time, 18:44.1. She finished first in 5,000 meters at the Sept. 13 CCAL meet and the 3 mile run at the Oct. 24 CCAL meet. Leach shattered her previous personal best 5,000 meter time, beating the mark she set last season as a sophomore by nearly a minute.
The fans noticed her performance, voting her The Bee’s Girls Player of the Week.
Leach came in first, earning 55% of the votes in the weekly poll. She finished ahead of Davis cross country runner Jymena Nguyen Marquez and Hughson volleyball player Emily Yarbrough who came in second and third, respectively.
