New ‘Star Wars’ Feature in Development With ‘Sleight’ Director JD Dillard

“Sleight” filmmaker J.D. Dillard and “Luke Cage” writer Matt Owens have been tapped to develop a new “Star Wars” project, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.

At press time, it is unclear whether this new “Star Wars” project is a theatrical or Disney+ release.

As always with all things “Star Wars” related, plot details are being kept under wraps by Jawas on the planet Tatooine. Should the new “Star Wars” project move forward, it is unclear if Dillard would direct. This new project is also unrelated to the other “Star Wars” projects being developed “The Last Jedi” director Rian Johnson and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.

As Disney plots the future of “Star Wars” following “Rise of Skywalker,” Disney CEO Bob Iger said the studio could look to Disney+ characters, which will no doubt get fans excited over the possibility of getting “Baby Yoda: A Star Wars Story.” During a recent episode of the YouTube series, “The Star Wars Show,” Iger mentioned that the future of “Star Wars” is multi-platform.

“I love the ability to really be agnostic in terms of what platform it’s being made for,” Iger said. “And so it could be, down the road, that a TV show becomes a movie and a movie becomes a TV series. I’m not making any announcements here or not, but I think it’s important for us to be agnostic.”

“I don’t look at it as just television, I look at it as an extension of ‘Star Wars’ storytelling,” Iger added. “What Disney+ has given us the ability to do is to do just that, is to bring ‘Star Wars’ to people in new ways, and to bring new ‘Star Wars’ to people. It’s not the same places or the same characters. Just look at ‘Mandalorian.’ While, obviously, there’s a lot shared, there’s a lot that’s really fresh, and I love that.”

The next theatrical “Star Wars” movies are currently dated for Dec. 16, 2022, with other entries planned in Dec. 2024 and Dec. 2026.

Dillard first made a splash at Sundance with his 2016 genre thriller “Sleight,” which was acquired by Focus. This is not Dillard’s first time working on “Star Wars” as he worked in a production capacity on 2015’s “The Force Awakens” and played a stormtrooper in “Rise of Skywalker.” He is repped by CAA, Circle of Confusion, and law firm Ginsburg Daniels.

Owens is currently co-writing a live-action adaptation of the “One Piece” manga for Netflix. He is repped by CAA and Circle of Confusion.

Disney and Lucasfilm declined to comment.
