The Stars Came Out for the Serpentine Gallery Summer Party
As expected, last night’s Serpentine Summer Party in London was a chic affair. Co-hosted by Chanel, Yana Peel, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Adwoa Aboah, the grounds of the Serpentine Gallery were bustling with glamourous folk who came from far and wide. Award winning Mexican Architect Frida Escobedo designed this year’s Serpentine Pavillion using stacks of grey roofing tiles. With these modest materials, she created an ordered yet sophisticated arrangement within Kensington Gardens. “It's not about super expensive finishes,” Escobedo says. “It's about what you can create with simple things."
The marriage of fashion power house Chanel and the Serpentine Gallery brought together an eclectic bunch of artists, models, politicians, and actresses alike. There was many a British beauty with Suki Waterhouse, Alice Dellal, Yasmin Le Bon, and Alexa Chung dazzling in their heavenly Chanel gowns. Former prime minster David Cameron was in attendance, joined by his wife Samantha who looked particularly lovely in a Cefinn number. HRH Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie of York hung out by the Casamigos bar whilst actresses Natalie Dormer and Jenna Coleman caught up by the roof-tiled Pavillion.
In addition to cocktails, there was food a plenty. Some dined on cod and courgette flowers at Coco’s, Chanel’s restaurant within the gardens with beautifully illustrated menus by Fin Fellowes. For others, quinoa and salmon poké bowls were on offer as well as bespoke gelato by Joyce Wang—the sesame ice cream with charcoal cookies was particularly good.
As the sun was setting, the eternally cool Nile Rogers performed live on a stage created by Es Delvin. British designers, Erdem Moralioglu, Emilia Wickstead, and Alice Temperley got down to “Chic le Freak” and a couple of hours later, most were ready for bed. With an illustration by Karl Lagerfeld in hand, all left the gardens with a spring in their step. It had been a magical evening.
