Work starts on cutting edge child abuse centre

Sheldon Kennedy leaves his palm print for a display at child abuse centre in 2013. A new study offers the first national look at the prevalence of child abuse experienced by Canadian adults.

Construction is officially underway on a state of the art child abuse centre.

The Calgary Child Advocacy Centre will bring together all of the resources children and their families need to deal with abuse.

Executive Director Tara Robinson says that includes space for nurses, a doctor, therapists, police and lawyers — all located in a single child-friendly environment.

"There's an expectation from society that these need to be in place and this centre in Calgary will be the model that we move across this country," says child abuse advocate Sheldon Kennedy.

It's been 14 years since the former NHL player came forward with his story of abuse at the hand of his junior coach, Graham James.

The centre, expected to open later this year, will be located next to the Alberta Children's Hospital.

It's estimated 10,000 children in Calgary are abused each year.
