Stay off the Assiniboine River, province advises

The province is warning people to stay off the Assiniboine River because the ice is at risk of weakening and cracking following a change in flows from the Shellmouth Reservoir.

Releases from the Shellmouth Reservoir, which helps control water levels on the Assiniboine, have been underway since the fall, said the province.

In anticipation of spring runoff, the province is now reducing flows from the reservoir beginning Wednesday which could cause changes in ice conditions further east, along both the upper and lower Assiniboine River.

The change in water flows tends to break up ice and can make ice dangerous even if the ice appears to be unchanged from the surface.

"It is strongly advised that people use caution if venturing out onto what appears to be frozen rivers and lakes, due to potential weak ice conditions," said a news release from the province.
