Steven Vollrath charged following attempted shooting of New West police officer

Alleged drug trafficking ring busted by New Westminster Police, Burnaby RCMP

Seven charges have been laid against a man accused of trying to shoot a police officer in New Westminster, B.C.

Steven Vollrath is accused of leading police on a high-speed chase through three jurisdictions before escaping on May 18.

The 32-year-old Vollrath was arrested in Canmore, Alta., on Monday, and New Westminster Police say he is now in custody in Calgary, where he is being held on unrelated charges.

Police say the drama began when they responded to reports of two people sleeping in a vehicle and that the driver allegedly awoke and pointed a handgun at an officer and pulled the trigger, though it didn't discharge.

Charges against Vollrath, who's from Edmonton, are related to the use of a prohibited or restricted firearm, dangerous driving and fraudulently avoiding arrest.

New Westminster Police say the investigation involved RCMP in Canmore and the B.C. cities of Surrey, Burnaby, and the Vancouver and Edmonton police departments.
