Stricter rules for inmate supervision needed after prison kitchen stabbing: inquest

A 50-year-old inmate at Stony Mountain Institution has died in custody.

Correctional Service Canada says the inmate, who was serving a two-year, six-month sentence for break and enter, theft and uttering threats, died Friday.

"Emergency services were called and the offender was taken to the hospital," Correctional Services Canada wrote in a news release. "The inmate could not be resuscitated."

He'd been an inmate since October 2, 2014.

Officials say his next of kin have been notified of his death.

Police and the coroner have been notified, and Correctional Service Canada says it will review the circumstances of the incident.
