Storms delay waste collection

The Island Waste Management Corporation has received complaints that some garbage or compost carts haven't been picked up in almost a month, but CEO Gerry Moore says, with so many storms, it ran out of alternate dates for pick up.

"This winter has probably been the worst that we've ever had where we've actually had storms and multiple storms where we were unable to provide an alternate collection," said Moore.

"We do everything that we can to try to provide that for our customers, but in some cases we're just unable to do it. We just don't have the trucks to be able to do two or three days on one day."

The garbage or compost that was missed last week should be picked up this coming Monday, says Moore.

If carts are overflowing, Waste Watch will collect excess trash for missed customers as long as garbage is in plastic bags and compost in paper ones.

"Normally, we only allow two bags, excess bags, but now if you missed your collection we'll take whatever excess that you have," said Moore.
