Stranger Things has dropped a tense series four trailer that appears to give fans a glimpse of Eleven’s back story.

The upcoming fourth series of the Netflix sci-fi horror drama is expected to air later this year, although a date has yet to be announced.

The new clip shows children dressed in hospital gowns taking part in various tests, before the voice of Dr Martin Brenner (Matthew Modine) says: “Good morning children.”

“Good morning, Papa,” they respond.

“How are you today?” asks the doctor, who it was previously revealed experimented on children with special abilities.

“Good, Papa,” they reply.

“I’m glad to hear it,” Brenner continues, adding: “Because today, I have something very special planned for you.”

Heavy breathing is heard throughout the chilling exchange and then the camera zooms in on a room with the number “11” on the door.

“Eleven, are you listening?” Brenner asks, as the character played by Millie Bobby Brown is seen opening her eyes with a start.

Fans could barely contain their excitement after the teaser was released, with many pondering whether it means more of Eleven’s back story will be seen.

Matthew Modine has not appeared in the show since the debut season, but earlier this year he told Yahoo he would jump at the chance to return to the show:

“I’d love to be invited back. I really enjoyed working with [the show’s creators] Matt and Ross Duffer and the crew they assembled. It’s extraordinary how it took off and the heights it’s flown to. It’s a global phenomenon,” he said from his still-undisclosed secret location.

"If they choose to bring me back, I’ll jump in head first.”
