String of collisions involving pedestrians prompts safety warning from Calgary police

A rash of collisions on Calgary streets Friday morning has police reminding pedestrians, cyclists and drivers they need to use extra caution as fall gives way to winter.

There were at least five vehicle-versus-pedestrian accidents around the city as wet snow made the morning commute slippery in places.

All of the collisions were minor, and there were no reports of serious injuries.

Changing weather conditions combined with shorter daylight hours this time of year create more visibility problems on the roads, said traffic unit Staff Sgt. Paul Stacey.

"Historically, right across the province, November is the one month of the year where there are the most pedestrian collisions, the most concentrated number of pedestrian collisions," he said.

The evening drive home will also become darker when daylight saving time ends on Nov. 6.

Environment Canada says Calgary can expect 2 to 4 cm of snow by the end of Friday.
