Student from Mexico identified as victim of deadly Granville Island crash in Vancouver

The international student killed yesterday after a crash on Granville Island was a 23-year-old woman from Mexico.

The woman's name and home town have not been released.

But the Consulate General of Mexico said staff are providing support to the woman's family.

The Consulate "deeply regrets the death of the young Mexican student yesterday in Granville Island," said Patricia de la Maza, a consulate spokesperson.

De la Maza said consular officials are in contact with police and would be "attentive to the results of the pending Vancouver Police Department investigation."

On Friday, people laid bouquets of flowers in a sidewalk memorial to the young women who died.

Police say she was pinned under a SUV Thursday afternoon after the vehicle reversed and crashed through a store wall.

Two other pedestrians were injured.

Witness Jan Harmenzon ran to the scene after hearing "a loud screech, a bang, and then screaming."

She said off-duty paramedics also rushed over to help and ambulances arrived very quickly.

But for the young Mexican woman who'd come to Canada to study, it was too late.
