Students Protest in Belarus to Demand Lukashenko Resign as Strike Action Begins Across Country

Students staged protests in Belarus on October 26 in response to calls by opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya for nationwide strike action if President Alexander Lukashenko had not resigned by October 25.

This footage, shared by local news outlet Tut.by, shows hundreds of students gathered outside the TsUM department store in Minsk. Tut.by reported the students then marched to Victory Square in the center of the city.

Local news outlet Onliner.by said there were reports of security vehicles parked outside a number of factories in Minsk in anticipation of strike action. Videos posted to social media showed workers walking out on the job.

The protests followed a number of demands made by opposition leader Tikhanovskaya who called for nationwide action if they were not met.

The demands included Lukashenko’s resignation, an end to police use of force and a release of all political prisoners, reports said. Credit: Tut.by via Storyful
