Students spread holiday cheer at local women’s shelters

The holidays were a little brighter for women at Women’s House Serving Bruce and Grey in Kincardine and Owen Sound, thanks to the efforts of two KDSS students.

Friends Rashi Sood and Benisha Rangar were inspired to spread some kindness and holiday spirit this season, so decided to embark on a small fundraiser for women in shelters for the holidays. They understand these women are victims of violence that is out of their control and wanted to make the holidays a little brighter for them.

“It’s the season for giving,” said Sood. “The year has been really crazy, so we wanted to help people. We wanted to help locally because people don’t always notice the need in their community.”

The friends started a gofundme campaign and raised just over $600. They used the money to purchase snacks, fresh socks, gloves, combs, masks, lip balms and a variety of essential hygiene items the women could use. Items were packed into gift bags and 25 of the bags were given to each shelter, just before the holidays.

The girls have plans to continue the successful initiative in the future, and Sood said next time the goal is to collect feminine products, as they know they will be needed.
