Summerside Police rescue dog in distress from truck

Police on P.E.I. are again reminding people to not leave their unattended pets in vehicles after police had to go to extreme measures to rescue a dog in distress from a car in Summerside.

Around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, police received a report of a dog being left in a vehicle at a store on Granville Street.

Police say when officers found the dog in a truck with one window partially open, it appeared to be in distress.

The temperatures at the time were in the mid-high 20s but felt more like the high 30s and the open window was not enough to keep the dog safe.

Police were unable to locate the truck's owner and broke one of the windows to remove the dog.

The dog was given some water and after a few minutes, appeared to be fine.

Police Chief Dave Poirier says under the animal health and protection act police do this if they feel the animal is in distress.

"The safest thing is to leave your pet at home in the shade," he said. "Very important even if your windows are down a bit you must remember that the heat is still going inside your vehicle especially when the sun is reflecting off the windshield or any of the windows."

Poirier says if police do break a window to relieve an animal in distress, the damage is the vehicle owner's responsibility.

Summerside Police say they received three reports about animals left in cars during the heat this weekend.
