The Grande Prairie and District Catholic Schools have named Jessie Shirley its new Superintendent of Schools and CEO.

In early August, Shirley stepped into the role as the acting superintendent after the previous GPCSD superintendent Karl Germann moved to a new position at the Grande Prairie Regional College.

"We conducted a Canada-wide advertising search for our next superintendent,” said Michael Ouellette, GPCSD board chair.

“Dr. Shirley was selected from a field of truly outstanding candidates because of her demonstrated leadership capabilities and her commitment to excellence in serving our students and their families.”

Shirley brings 10 years of experience as the assistant superintendent of teaching and learning within the division.

She has worked for the district since 2004, beginning as an educational assistant and has since had extensive experience as a classroom teacher before taking on roles such as administrator, district lead for the Alberta Initiative for School Improvement, and assistant superintendent.

She received her doctorate in education from the University of Calgary with a focus on pedagogical approaches.

Shirley, a mother of three, has seen all her children complete kindergarten through grade 12 in the division.
