Surrey fire crews battle 2-alarm blaze at vacant home

A two-alarm fire caused heavy damage to a vacant house in Surrey Thursday morning.

The fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. at a boarded up home on 132 Street, near 80th Avenue.

Fire crews had to battle heavy flames from the exterior of the building.

"It was boarded up, so the crews had to spend a little extra time cutting in," said Battalion Chief Brian Carmichael.

Officials said firefighters have dealt with fires at this house before.

"This home here is a home that has had fires in the past," said Carmichael.

Crews knocked most of the fire down within an hour, preventing it from spreading to a neighbouring house.

The cause is under investigation and there is no word yet if it is considered suspicious.
