Surrey RCMP concerned by 'abnormally' high incidence of traffic accidents
After two men were hit by a car while on a crosswalk Thursday night, Surrey RCMP are asking road users to take greater care on the city's streets.
Last night's incident is just another in what police are calling an "abnormally high" number of pedestrian-involved accidents the city has seen this year.
In response, Surrey RCMP launched a pedestrian safety campaign four days ago and say they have already issued over 100 tickets to drivers and pedestrians alike, for infractions including jay-walking and failing to yield to pedestrians.
On Thursday, police responded around 6:45 p.m. PT, to the 6800 block of 25th Street, to find one of the men had been thrown by the impact of the first car into the path of another, and was pinned to the ground. Both victims were taken to hospital and subsequently released with minor injuries.
The incident is now under investigation, though police say neither speed nor distracted driving is believed to be a factor.
A six-year-old boy remains in critical but stable condition after he and his family were hit by a car while walking on a marked crosswalk in Surrey on Tuesday.
