Suspect apprehended after stolen van with little boy inside crashes in Huntington Hills

A little boy is safe after the van he was waiting in was stolen outside of the Alex Munro School in northeast Calgary Wednesday afternoon.

Calgary police say the keys were in the ignition, the van was unlocked and the driver was not inside when it was carjacked around 4 p.m. MT.

A man jumped in and took off with the four-year-old in the back.

Witnesses say the van went up on the boulevard, sheared off a post and ended up on an island nearby at the intersection of Fourth Street and 78th Avenue northeast.

The suspect ran away but was apprehended.

The child wasn't hurt and has since been reunited with his mother.

Police say the incident doesn't appear to be targeted.
