Suspect arrested after crash leaves MS Coast pedestrian in critical condition, police say
Gulfport Police have arrested a suspect in a hit and run Tuesday night that left a pedestrian in critical condition.
The suspect, 78-year-old Elio Gonzalo Fombellida, will face one count of leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury and one count of possession of a controlled substance, police said in a news release. Authorities arrested Fombellida on Tuesday and announced his charges on Thursday.
Police responded at 5:42 p.m. Tuesday to 25th Avenue and 19th Street after a car hit the pedestrian. The victim was in stable condition at a hospital on Tuesday night but Ducre said their condition had grown worse by Wednesday.
Police said Fombellida collided with a UPS truck, fled, then hit the pedestrian and two other cars.
Authorities said they found Fombellida in his car and arrested him after he tried to flee. Officers searched him and found cocaine in a pocket that Fombellida said belonged to a friend, according to the news release.
Fombellida is held in the Harrison County jail on a $300,000 bond.
The crash closed all southbound lanes on 25th Avenue from 19th Street to 18th Street. The road stayed closed for over an hour and police asked drivers to avoid the area.
