Police say they've arrested a man suspected in the random stabbing of a woman in downtown Calgary on July 6.

The incident occurred around 11:40 p.m. when a man approached the woman from behind on the corner of Seventh Avenue and First Street S.W. and stabbed her multiple times.

The suspect fled and the woman was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Police say an officer recognized the suspect from security camera footage, which led to the search of a home in the 2700 block of 12th Avenue S.E. on Sunday.

The suspect was subsequently arrested, according to police.

Ethan Daryl Lawless, 19, has been charged with aggravated assault and remains in custody.
