Suspect in daytime home invasion appears in Fredericton court

David Burlet made his first court appearance Wednesday as the suspect in a daytime home invasion on Smythe Street in Fredericton.

The 33-year-old Hanwell man is charged with break and enter, assault with a weapon, disguise with intent, and breach of probation.

He was remanded in custody and is to be back in court Thursday for a bail hearing at 10 a.m.

A homeowner was injured during the break and enter, which happened at about 9 a.m. Tuesday, police said.

A couple heard an intruder in their house at the top of Smythe Street and called 911,

As officers arrived, a man ran through the backyard and hopped a fence, police said. An arrest was made shortly after.

The injured homeowner was taken to Chalmers hospital. In a news release Wednesday, police asked residents to keep their property secure and let police know about suspicious activities.
