A family of four and their three dogs were all found shot dead in their home in Romeoville, Ill., just 26 miles outside Chicago Sunday.

Now, Nathaniel Huey, Jr., 31, of Streamwood, Ill., who local police had considered a suspect, is dead following a pursuit by law enforcement in Catoosa, Okla., some 650 miles away from the slayings, Romeoville Police Deputy Chief Chris Burne said at a press conference Wednesday.

Huey, who was driving when police attempted to make a traffic stop, “immediately attempted to elude the officers resulting in a single car crash,” Burne said.

The car burst into flames, and officers heard what sounded like two gunshots, Burne said. Huey was found shot dead, his body slumped in the driver’s seat. A woman, who police have not identified but investigators also believe is connected to the family’s killing, was in critical condition from another gunshot wound at the time of the press conference.

When Alberto Rolón, 38, Zoraida Bartolomei, 32, and their two young sons, Adriel and Diego, were found dead inside their home, police quickly said they did not believe it to be a murder-suicide but rather a targeted attack.

Police had performed a wellness check Sunday after one of the parents did not come into work and did not answer repeated phone calls, according to police, who believe the family was murdered sometime between 9 p.m. Saturday and 5 a.m. Sunday.

The family had recently moved to the community and often kept mostly to themselves, Lynn Phillips, a neighbor, told PEOPLE earlier this week.

"I'm devastated," she said. "I've cried on and off since last night."

Authorities said that they located Huey and the woman “with a relationship to Huey” after her relatives reported her missing September 19. The Catoosa Police Department noticed the reported license plate in their jurisdiction Wednesday, Burne said at the press conference, and attempted to make a traffic stop, leading to the car chase.

Police say the investigation into the family’s murders is still ongoing.
