Suspect in UNLV Shooting that Killed 3 Is 67-Year-Old Career College Professor: Reports

The suspected gunman who killed three people and injured a fourth on the campus of UNLV before he was killed by police was a college professor who might have unsuccessfully applied for a job at the school, according to multiple reports.

According to law enforcement sources cited by the Associated Press, CNN and ABC News, the shooter was Anthony Polito, 67. Per his LinkedIn profile, Polito described himself as a “semi-retired university professor,” who previously worked at East Carolina University from 2001 to 2017.

The AP reported that police searched an apartment in Henderson, Nev., and located a cell phone belonging to Polito as well as other electronic devices.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sheriff Kevin McMahill said Wednesday evening that three people were killed in the shooting, which began just before noon in the school’s Beam Hall, the business school building. Police also said there were reports of shots fired at the Student Union, which is directly across from Beam.

The shooter was killed following a confrontation with police, McMahill said.

During a press conference Wednesday, McMahill said a group of students had been gathered outside Beam Hall to play games when the shooting occurred, and that “countless” lives could’ve been lost had police not responded quickly.

Authorities have not yet released the names of any of the victims, or specified if they were students or staff.
