Suspicious fire at auto recycling depot destroys two buildings and numerous cars

An overnight fire destroyed two buildings and numerous cars, and caused several small explosions at an auto recycling depot.

A firefighter suffered a minor hand injury while battling the blaze.

Firefighters were called to the business, located in an industrial park at 28th St. and 5th Ave. N.E., around 1 a.m. on Thursday. Because the fire was spreading quickly, a second alarm was called to bring in more firefighters and equipment.

Damage to the two buildings is substantial, but adjacent businesses were not damaged. Firefighters remained at the scene after the fire was doused to deal with hot spots.

The fire is considered suspicious and the arson unit has been called in to investigate.
