Impaired SUV driver crashes into Winnipeg street sweeper

A 25-year-old man is in hospital and facing several charges, including impaired driving, after his SUV crashed into a City of Winnipeg street sweeper.

The sweeper was working at Grant Avenue and Chalfont Road, near the Assiniboine Forest, at 2 a.m. Friday when it sprang a hydraulic leak.

A second sweeper in the area parked behind the damaged one while it was being repaired. Strobe lights were turned on the vehicles so they would be clearly visible to drivers, police said.

A Jeep Cherokee going eastbound on Grant slammed into the rear sweeper then lost control of his vehicle. The driver sustained multiple upper and lower body injuries and was sent to hospital in unstable condition.

He has since been upgraded to stable condition.

He is facing the following charges:

- Driving while impaired.

- Failing/refusing to provide a breath sample.

- Failing to comply with court-ordered conditions.

The scene was still being investigated during Friday morning's rush hour, which caused a few traffic delays in the area, but the area has since been cleared.
