Swimming not recommended at 9 Windsor-Essex beaches

Swimming is not recommended at nine local beaches at the moment, but none of them will be formally closed for the weekend.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit released its weekly beach testing results on Thursday.

The latest results were gathered on June 30 — a day earlier than usual because of the Canada Day holiday.

Nine of 10 local beaches showed bacterial E. coli counts higher than 100, which health officials say is a possible health risk. That's why swimming is not recommended.

The beaches with bacterial counts higher than 100 in the June 30 samples were:

- Cedar Beach (315)

- Cedar Island Beach (721)

- Colchester Beach (318)

- Hillman Marsh Beach (274)

- Holiday Beach (104)

- Mettawas Beach (594)

- Sandpoint Beach (800)

- Seacliff Beach (299)

- West Belle River Beach (327)

When the health unit testing samples return a count of 1,000 or higher, a beach is closed.

When the count is below 100, it is considered to be a low health risk for swimmers.
