Sydney Academy celebrates 175th anniversary in 2016

Hundreds of graduates of Sydney Academy will gather in July of 2016 for a reunion to celebrate the 175th anniversary of their high school.

The co-educational school has been in its current location on Terrace St. since 1959, having outgrown five previous buildings since its founding in the north end of Sydney in 1841.

Principal Kevin Deveaux said reunion organizers are anticipating huge interest in the celebration.

"It's been a centrepiece in our community, so there's a long, rich history. There's a multitude of alumni and they have a great love for the school," he said.

Reunion co-ordinator Leanne Mombourquette-Hutt said planning for the anniversary events next year is already well advanced.

"This is about bringing our alumni back to the school that they graduated from and bringing people back to Cape Breton, reliving their high school careers or reliving and making new memories with their new families and friends," she said.

A website has been created for registration. There's also an events calendar and a Facebook page.

The reunion will make use of venues all around Sydney, including Centre 200.

It will be held from July 28 to 31, 2016.
