Sydney Sweeney Wore Voluminous Disco Curls to ‘Prom’ and They’re Peak Party Hair Inspo

Sydney Sweeney is making a serious case for the return of disco curls.

The Euphoria star, who turned 26 on September 12, celebrated her birthday this past weekend with a star-studded ’80s-prom-themed party. And in true Sweeney fashion, the Laneige ambassador really committed, going all out when it came to hair, makeup, and overall vibe.

Sweeney practically transformed into prom queen for the night, rocking va-va-voluminous disco curls and a bright pink, puff-sleeved minidress that looks like it was ripped straight from the set of 16 Candles. The decor was similarly John Hughes–worthy, as the venue was decked out with several disco balls, a photobooth courtesy of Revolve, and cheesy party streamers adorning the walls, all of which truly encapsulate the over-the-top aesthetic of the era.

Countless stars were also in attendance—and on theme. Nicola Peltz Beckham posted a selfie of her own prom-inspired glam on Instagram, and Camila Mendes, Anitta, Alexandra Shipp, Emily Tosta, and Barbie’s Ariana Greenblatt all posted Stories of the celebration throughout the evening.

That said, there was one true star of the evening: Sweeney’s ultravoluminous disco curl hairstyle, which I’m personally dying to recreate ASAP.

Fortunately, with Halloween and the holidays just around the corner, we finally have an excuse to rock our own over-the-top glam complete with disco curls, which are surprisingly easy to DIY.

To get your own disco curls, start with a volumizing shampoo and conditioner, then apply heat protectant. The next step depends on your natural hair texture. “If you have naturally textured hair, a diffuser is great to enhance the texture and volume,” says Sarah Potempa, celebrity hairstylist and founder of The Beachwaver Co.

If you want to add texture and volume, however, Joseph Maine, celebrity hairstylist and cofounder of Trademark Beauty, suggests “using a blow-dryer brush, like the Trademark Beauty Easy Blo, [and flipping] your head over as you continually brush toward the ground.”

He adds, “This will push your roots upward and allow some extra fluff in the hair.”

Next, curl your hair using a 3/4- or one-inch curling iron. “Wrap your hair around very tightly to the base of the iron and allow them to cool completely before brushing them out,” Maine says. If your hair struggles to hold its curls or tends to fall, Potempa suggests going with the smallest barrel possible, like the Beachwaver S.75. “This will help give a tight, springy curl,” she says.

“Continue making tight curls throughout this section, alternating the direction of the curl between away and toward the face,” Potempa continues. “Alternating the direction of the curl will help create more texture throughout the curls once we style them.” And be sure to let your curls cool completely before touching or styling them further, as this will help set the curl pattern, allowing for longer-lasting curls.

Once your curls have cooled, brush them out with a wide-toothed comb or styling brush, and finish with thickening texturizing spray for additional volume. “This will add grit and lift to hair and will also [make it more matte] for a [naturaler] looking hairstyle,” Potempa says. “Play around with flipping the bangs or the part for even more volume.”

And just like that, you’re ready to celebrate with Sydney Sweeney.
