However, "the main difference between a regular bra and a t-shirt bra is that a t-shirt bra has been designed to appear seamless and smooth when worn under any t-shirt," explains Angela Loucks, lead consultant for Knix Virtual Fittings.

T-shirt bras are usually more comfortable, thanks to minimal design, and are versatile enough to be worn under most clothing—but especially t-shirts.

What should I look for in a t-shirt bra?

There are a few factors you should keep in mind when you're shopping for the best t-shirt bra for you. Here are some of them.

Material

When it comes to the best materials for t-shirt bras, Jené Luciani Sena, bra expert and bestselling author of The Bra Book recommends microfiber. "Microfiber is the best option as it can be completely smooth unlike lace and other fabrics on unlined bras."

But it really comes down to personal preference. Some people may prefer cotton because it's more breathable, and others a spandex blend for its stretchiness. You should ultimately pick something you feel comfortable wearing all day.

Lining/Wiring

Although many t-shirt bras have an underwire, there are some that don't. However, if you're looking for a more lifted look, your best bet will probably be to choose something with underwire. "A wire separates breasts and tacks onto the body better for a secure fit and a lifted, separated look," says Caldwell. If all you're after is comfort, go wire-free for sure, though.

When it comes to lining, it's all about preference. If you're looking for a little more push-up, you may want to opt something with more padding, but if you prefer something light and breathable, most lightly-lined bras will do.

Size

It is important that any t-shirt bras you buy are the correct size. "You should avoid any gaps or bubbling over in the cup, which takes away from the smooth look," explains Caldwell.

Those with bigger boobs may want to consider full-coverage cups if they plan on wearing a low-cut t-shirt or dress, though. "Fuller coverage is great for those with softer breast tissue that might try to slip out of a more plunging neckline or less coverage option," explains Caldwell. But again, choose what feels best to you—let that be your number one takeaway.

How should a t-shirt bra fit?

When judging the fit of a t-shirt bra, Loucks says you should ensure a few things. First, the band and straps should not be digging into the skin in any areas.

Loucks also recommends making sure that there isn't any gaping or bulging in the cup area and that the band does not rise in the back. It should not pinch anywhere on your back. If it does, it means the bra does not fit correctly, and, it's probably not comfortable either, says Loucks—so pivot accordingly.
