A 10-year-old boy is fighting for his life at a Calgary hospital after he was struck by a car while riding his bike near the town of Taber in southern Alberta.

"He was regrettably in true life-threatening condition," when he was rushed to the Taber Health Centre by local emergency crews, said EMS spokesman Stuart Brideaux.

The boy was stabilized and flown to the Alberta Children's Hospital by STARS ambulance, where he remains in serious condition, Brideaux said.

The child was riding in a residential area in the village of Barnwell, just west of Taber, around 4:30 p.m. Saturday when he was hit.

The accident took place at Range Road 174 and South Village Road, officials said.

The RCMP is investigating the factors leading up to the crash.
