Take a tour of a garden where all the plants can kill you

Stopping to smell the flowers is not encouraged at the Poison Garden at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, England. That’s because, as its name suggests, the lush grounds are home exclusively to plants and flowers that are lethal to humans.

Head gardener Trevor Jones dressed in a protective suit and facemask for this video tour where he goes about his job tending to the dangerous foliage.

“This plant is giant hogweed,” he says, as he stands next to a bloom of large green leaves and fluffy white flowers. “It will get up to about eight foot high and it’s phototoxic, so it will burn your skin and give you blisters for up to seven years.”

There are about 95 plants in the ghastly garden, though the collection is constantly expanding. Other floras on the grounds include laurel, which produces cyanide, and Atropa belladonna, which sprouts deadly berries.

Jones says that many of the plants on display in the Poison Garden are commonly found in residential gardens.

“People are intrigued by poisonous plants, and often very worried when they come out, because many of them will be growing these plants at home,” says Jones. “They don’t realize the powerful impact they can have on us humans.”

Makes you think twice about tending to those weeds, doesn’t it?
