Taking it one day at a time

Sarah Smith of Port Mouton doesn’t have a big secret to her longevity.

“I just keep going, just keep moving around and take it one day at a time,” said Smith, who celebrated her 108th birthday at Stonehaven Lodge in Port Mouton, not once but twice. There was cake to be enjoyed on December 11 and on her actual birthday, December 13.

A few guests stopped in to wish her well on both days, with safety protocols in place.

Queens-Shelburne MLA Kim Masland was one of her visitors and presented her with a birthday certificate.

“In 2017 I had the pleasure to meet Sarah Smith who was celebrating her birthday. That day, it felt as if I made a new friend, and the comfort I felt in her presence was as if I had known her all my life. I admired her strength, resilience, beauty, and kindness. Sarah was celebrating her 105th birthday,” said Masland on a Facebook post.

“We laughed and made a deal that, as long as I was her MLA, I would visit on her special day. Sarah smiled and chuckled as I said I hope to be MLA for 15 more years.”

Smith, whose maiden name is Fraser, was born in 1912 in central Port Mouton, the third youngest of 12 children.

As a young adult, she moved to Liverpool and worked at a few different jobs. She married Murray Smith in 1942. They lived on a hobby farm on Meadow Pond Lane and had one child, Jim, who now lives in New Brunswick with his family.

Murray passed away in 1993 at the age of 88. She continued living on the farm until she was in her mid-90s, when she decided to move into an apartment in Liverpool.

Smith was there and looked after herself until she was almost 101 before deciding to move back to her home town and into Stonehaven.

Gloria Harnish, who, along with her husband Tim Rudderham, owns and runs the Stonehaven Lodge, said Smith is in great health and only last year decided to start using a walker. “She really is a fighter as far as keeping herself going,” she said.
