Tamara Beatty, vocal coach on The Voice, swings home to Saskatoon

Aspiring vocal performers can share one thing with top flight reality show contestants this weekend in Saskatoon.

A behind-the-scenes coach from The Voice is giving a workshop right here in 'TuneTown,' the city of her birth.

Tamara Beatty is near the start of a national tour, and "I wanted to kick it off with my roots." She launched in Vulcan, Alta. before heading to Saskatoon.

Beatty took a long, winding route to get from here and back again. While still a tot, she moved to Vulcan, Alberta — a small town between Lethbridge and Calgary.

From the time she was a toddler, her parents noticed how she loved to sing. So they put her in singing lessons. By the age of 16, she was coaching and opened her own business.

These days, she splits her time between Calgary and LosAngeles. She joined The Voice in Season 5 of the show.

Unleashing inner artists

Saturday's workshop is called "Unleash Your Inner Artist."

"We're going to look at different ways to draw out you," Beatty said. "To draw out the 'you-ness' in your music, to help you find your own voice in music."

She is able to draw from her experience working with contestants on The Voice.

"When they come in they often have a great amount of talent, not always all the confidence or the experience that they need, and not always all of the technical experience that they might need in order to withstand the demands of the competition and just their craft in general."

Beatty also draws on her earlier experience as a competitive athlete being trained by three Olympic coaches, to know exactly what to say to each singer as he or she is about to step out on stage.

"I get a chance to sort of use that timing and tact in this particular situation," Beatty said.

Her workshop takes place today from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CST at Long and McQuade, 721 43rd St. E. It's for ages 14 and up. The cost is $200.00 for adults.
