Taylor Swift's “Carolina,” a.k.a one of the most highly-anticipated songs of the summer has finally dropped. She wrote and recorded “Carolina” for Where the Crawdads Sing, a movie based on the popular book by Delia Owens. The film will hit theaters on July 15, featuring “Carolina” during the post-film credits.

Fans of Taylor Swift caught on to early clues about the release when the Instagram account for Where the Crawdads Sing, @crawdadsmovie, posted a series of photos with a hidden message. The capitalized letters in the post spelled out “Carolina this Thursday.” Swift has used this tactic before to signal the release of new albums.

Swift officially announced the release of her new song on her Instagram story two days later. Fans couldn’t be happier as this is the first new song she has released since her Evermore album in 2020, aside from bonus tracks on re-recorded Taylor’s Version albums.

“I wrote the song 'Carolina' alone and asked my friend @aarondessner to produce it. I wanted to create something haunting and ethereal to match this mesmerizing story,” Swift posted to Instagram in March. The song is meant to match the emotions viewers will feel at the end of the film.

From what we know so far, Swift tried to stay true to the time period the film is set in while creating the song. The film is set in the early 1950s so she only used instruments that were around before 1953 and recorded the track in one take.

Swift was inspired to write “Carolina” purely because she is a fan of the book, according to Reese Witherspoon, producer for Where the Crawdads Sing. "I freaked out. When I first heard Taylor wrote a song for this movie, first of all, she's one of my favorite artists of all time, but her songwriting is so moving and it's why she has millions and millions, millions, millions of fans across the world. But the fact that she read this book and loved it so much and then she heard we were making a movie. She was making her Folklore album and then she wrote a song with that whole Folklore team, which was so haunting and magical and the beautiful instruments they used...I was blown away."

This isn’t the first time a Taylor Swift song has been used for a movie. She's written songs such as “Crazier" for Hannah Montana: The Movie, “Eyes Open" and “Safe and Sound” for The Hunger Games, “Beautiful Ghosts” for Cats, “I Don’t Want to Live Forever” for Fifty Shades Darker, “Today Was a Fairytale” for Valentine's Day and “Sweeter Than Fiction” for One Chance.
