Taylor Swift’s Surprise VMAs Minidress Has a Major Easter Egg on It
Taylor Swift started her MTV VMAs night in a Dior plaid corset dress, but she didn’t end there: During the broadcast, she changed into a minidress with a UFO on it. The glittery number is a major Easter egg for her song “Down Bad” from The Tortured Poets Department.
As the lyrics of the first verse leading into the chorus go, “Did you really beam me up? / In a cloud of sparkling dust / Just to do experiments on / Tell me I was the chosen one / Showed me that this world is bigger than us / Then sent me back where I came from / For a moment I knew cosmic love / Now I’m down bad, crying at the gym.”
Swift gave her first 2024 VMAs speech earlier in the night when she won the award for Best Collaboration with Post Malone. She applauded her collaborator, saying, “It is so amazing to have the opportunity to thank and honor the people who worked so hard with me on this video. There is a very clear reason why Post Malone is everyone in music’s favorite person to collab with. And it is because you are so ridiculously talented. You are so versatile, and you’re the most down-to-earth person. Honestly, so unfailingly polite. It has taken me forever to get him to stop calling me ma’am.”
Swift and Malone share several more nominations, and Swift herself has 12. She is up for Video of the Year (“Fortnight”), Artist of the Year, Song of the Year (“Fortnight”), Best Collaboration (“Fortnight”), Song of the Summer (“Fortnight”), VMAs Most Iconic Performance (“You Belong With Me”), and Best Pop Artist. Her and Malone’s “Fortnight” video is additionally up for Best Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Visual Effects, and Best Art Direction.
