With his team 0-2 and a short week ahead, Dolphins coach Brian Flores addresses issues

Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores addressed several topics on Monday morning, with his team 0-2 and having only a couple of days to prepare for Thursday’s game at Jacksonville:

Where do corrections need to be made on defense?

“Communication, run defense, pass defense,” Flores said. “We’ve got a lot of corrections to make. There were some bright spots, some improvement in a few areas, too many big plays and getting off the field on third down. There were critical moments in the game where there were plays to be made, communication to be made. We’ve got to make them and we didn’t do them yesterday.”

On cornerback Byron Jones’ status for Thursday after leaving early in Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury: “Byron Jones is in this morning. We will take a look. Obviously, a quick turnaround. He would have to heal pretty quickly. We are not ruling him out yet. We’ll see how it goes the next couple days. We’re playing in a couple days, so we’ll see where he is. No official update.”

On rookie Noah igbinoghene’s rough call in coverage against Stefon Diggs after Jones left: “Noah is a mentally tough kid. Playing against a receiver of that caliber the entire day after an injury, getting put in that position.

“He had some instances where he covered him well, a lot of instances where [Diggs] was able to get open against him. It’s a good experience for him. He will learn from it. There are some things he could easily do better to put himself in better position. Hopefully in the long run, this will be good thing for him.”

On how the pass rush is doing (just one sack on Sunday): “Not enough. We’ve got to do a better job as a coaching staff of putting them in position to rush better. The players have got to work their techniques, fundamentals and just rush better.

“There’s a lot of things we have to work on. That’s at the top of the list. We’re still trying to find who does what best and put guys in position where they’re doing what they do best from a rush standpoint, coverage standpoint, return standpoint.... From a coaching standpoint, and that starts with me, we’ve got to put guys in better position to make plays.”

On the team’s leaky pass coverage: “It’s a combination of pressure, mixing coverages, potentially keeping someone on the weak side. We have answers to all those things. As a press team, we have to cover better. We can’t let people off the hook from that standpoint. We got to coach it better, mix the coverages and cover better. We’re not pointing fingers or making excuses.”

On playing a Thursday night game: “Lot of challenges [in a short week]. You don’t have as much time. You don’t have normal schedule. You have to get it all in a short period of time.

“As far as putting anything brand new in, it’s hard to do. You don’t [have practice time to do that]. Most teams might throw one or two new wrinkles in. [But you don’t want] a lot of new learning. After a tough loss, you want to get it turned around and get to it quickly. We’re looking forward to it.”

On wide receiver Preston Williams’ body control: “Preston is a young player, very talented. We talked to him about his technique at the top of routes, catching the football with his hands. He has worked at it a lot, works very hard at it.

“He has good body control, made some tough catches in practice. I know he had a nice catch on the sideline. Players have good plays, bad plays. We try to correct the bad ones. I don’t want to label him a bad body control guy.”

Williams dropped a touchdown pass on fourth-and-goal on Sunday.

On how his offensive line played Sunday: “It was a good [Bills] front. Couple blitzers got in there and sacked us three times. Overall we had time to step up and throw the football. We executed at an OK level. We’ve got to get better.

“There were some instances where there was too much pressure, and we need more time, especially in critical moments of the game. We made some improvement but at the same time, we can be better.”

Flores offered condolences to New England Patriots running back James White, whose father died in a car accident in South Florida on Sunday. His mother is in critical condition.

“His father is an incredible person, done a lot for a lot of people in South Florida… It’s a big loss. I would look at what his father Tyrone did for a lot of young kids in South Florida…

“We’re a football family, and I just want him to know he has our support. We’re praying for his mom right now. His father was truly a great, great man who did a lot for a lot of people and people need to know about that.”

Tyrone White was a Miami-Dade police captain.

Flores knows White from their time together in New England.
