Tecumseh arena-expansion costs jump as high as $24M

Property taxes in Tecumseh set to rise, but mayor says it could have been much worse

Tecumseh town councillors gave the green light to the expansion of its recreation complex, which now has a ballooned cost of $24 million.

The cost of the the new arena jumped about 35 per cent from earlier estimates of up to $18 million. Council approved the project Tuesday night.

"We've done a little bit more homework and we've come up with a figure that's more in line with today's construction costs," said Paul Anthony, the town's director of recreation.

The gymnasium in the complex might also be larger than originally planned and more room is needed for storage space, he explained.

The new complex will also include an indoor sports field for soccer, football and baseball, as well as smaller rooms for meetings and activities.
