Mom speaks out after fireworks fight erupts at Christie Pits Park for 2nd straight year

A neighbourhood mom is warning that Monday night's fireworks fight in Christie Pits Park that left a teenage boy with a serious injury isn't a first-time occurrence.

Nadia Jaber found out teenagers were aiming fireworks at each other at the park after her daughter went to a fireworks display there last year.

When her children asked to go see the Victoria Day fireworks this year, she decided to tag along.

"There were kids running around everywhere, rounds of shooting at each other," Jaber said. "At a certain point it became really, really intense."

Jaber called police when one boy was struck in the eye.

Paramedics were called to the scene to treat the teen shortly after 9:30 p.m. He was taken to hospital with a serious injury.

"There must be some supervision from the parents themselves, or the community, or the city or the police," Jaber said. "These are teenagers; they can get carried away."

Toronto police spokesperson Gary Long says officers received numerous calls about the incident, which started around 9 p.m. No arrests were made and Long was not aware of any warnings issued by police.

Before leaving the park, Jaber took a video of the teens. She posted it to Twitter and hopes it will raise some awareness.

She says she does not blame the teens for being excited but wonders why they were able to get their hands on so many fireworks in the first place.
