Teen murdered after school fight, Raleigh police say. Suspect only wanted to ‘scare’ her

A 13-year-old girl shot dead in a Raleigh apartment died as a result of a fight at school with her former best friend, Wake County court documents said.

Last April, Raleigh police found Mykia Daniel dead of a gunshot wound to the head in an apartment on North Hills Drive.

Search warrants made public this week said Daniel’s parents called police after receiving news that she may have been killed inside the apartment.

In a series of search warrants, police said Daniel and another Wake County student had recently been suspended for fighting at school, and that other students told school staff she had been killed as a result of the fight.

Police had responded to the same address only five days earlier after reports of a juvenile with a gun.

Warrants said several people were present when the teen was shot, and they meant to scare rather than kill her.

The victim’s sister showed police several Instagram posts relevant to the homicide, one of which read, “Nooo man my bby girl you was my dawg my mfn right hand when shit went down IDC I love you girlll I’m sorryyyyyy.”

The sister also showed police an Instagram message from an apologetic juvenile promising to turn himself in.

“I’m sorry, frl I’m turning myself in tdy I love her and mean nun of dis to happen I’m sorry I wanted to say I’m sorry,” it read.

Zylon Abrams, now 17, was indicted for first-degree murder in May.

Kimberly Muktarian, a family friend and advocate, said the girl had been struggling and that her mother had repeatedly sought help from Wake County, though she did not say what kind of help. Daniels was described as a runaway in search warrants.

“Certainly a lot of questions and devastation, to say the least,” she said in April. “She is just one that fell through the cracks.”
